Outlook
Employment prospects for sales, marketing, and advertising managers are considered good in the period 2010 - 2014. The number of positions in Manitoba in 2010 is estimated at 4450.
The wholesale trade sector, and manufacturing, where this employment is concentrated, are sensitive to prevailing economic conditions and are expected to weaken over the forecast period. While employee reductions will likely continue in the early part of the forecast period, some manufacturing firms are increasing their sales staff in order to seek out new and expanding markets for their goods. Opportunities also occur as a result of the significant turnover in this occupation and the mobility between companies.
The adoption of e-commerce and market globalization will have a profound influence on these positions in medium and large companies. The use of internet technologies for marketing and sales will require that managers have a thorough understanding of how the technology works and its potential for e-commerce. Market globalization requires an international perspective, and knowledge of technical and cultural factors crucial for successful marketing in other countries.
Employment opportunities exist throughout Manitoba. The largest proportion of sales, marketing and advertising managers work in the Wholesale Trade industry (43%), followed by Manufacturing (16%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (9%), Information and Cultural Industries (9%) .
