Outlook
Employment prospects for receptionists are expected to be good the period 2010 to 2014. Employment prospects for switchboard operators, who make up a small proportion of this occupational group, are expected to be limited due to the impact of office automation such as e-mail, internet, and voice mail . With a large occupational workforce, estimated at 5,360 in 2010, there will be frequent job opportunities occurring as a result of turnover.
Receptionists are employed in a broad range of public and private institutions and companies. Receptionist duties are frequently combined with clerical responsibilities such as filing and word processing. The scope of the job is likely to be much broader in small businesses or agencies.
Receptionists and switchboard operators are employed in all industry sectors, with the greatest concentration in Health Care and Social Assistance (47%), followed by Other Services (except Public Administration) (7%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (7%) and Retail Trade (6%). A proportionally larger share of jobs are located in Winnipeg, but they are found in all regions.
