Outlook
Employment prospects for architects are expected to be good in the 2010 to 2014 period due to the level of industrial, commercial, office, retail and residential construction planned in the province. The employment of architects is affected by changes in economic conditions and as construction activity is volatile from one year to the next the situation could change fairly rapidly. The number of architects working in Manitoba in 2010 is estimated at 355.
In urban centres there is increasing activity in home renovations, new condominium developments, conversions of exisiting older industrial buildings to multi-use residence and commercial entities and construction of assisted living facilities for seniors. There is also a growing interest in green design, where the environmental performance of buildings is maximized by reducing energy and resource use, minimizing pollution and environmental impact.
A proportionally larger share of jobs for architects are located in Winnipeg. Across industries, most work in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services sector (85%), followed by Public Administration (10%) and Manufacturing (6%).
