Outlook
Employment prospects for medical laboratory technologists and pathologists' assistants are expected to be good in the period 2010 - 2014. Employment in Manitoba in 2010 is estimated at 890.
The volume of demand for medical analyses and laboratory tests continues to increase in response to the medical treatment needs of an aging and more health-conscious population and the development of new types of tests. At the same time, technological advances have simplified some testing procedures such that a large number of tests previously conducted in laboratories can now be done by users themselves (eg, pregnancy tests, diabetes tests and testing for sexually transmitted diseases).
Automation has eliminated much of the routine lab work and has allowed for more individual productivity. Sophisticated computerization and testing continues to be introduced into the lab resulting in higher skill requirements for laboratory workers.
Diagnostic Services of Manitoba (DSM Inc.) was created in 2002 as the not-for-profit corporation responsible for all of Manitoba's public laboratory services and for rural diagnostic imaging services. DSM is the largest employer of diagnostic professionals in the province.
This profession has a significant number of workers at or near retirement age and these retirements should create a number of openings over the next five years. There is greater demand for medical laboratory technologists in rural and remote northern communities
A proportionally larger number of jobs for medical laboratory technologists and pathologist's assistants are located in Winnipeg. The majority of jobs are found in the Health Care and Social Assistance sector (93%), followed by Public Administration (3%) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (2%). For those employed in the Health sector, 62% work in hospitals, 36% in community based clinics and 2% in nursing and residential care facilities.
