Description
Animal care workers feed, handle, train and groom animals and assist veterinarians, animal health technologists and technicians and animal breeders. Pet groomers clip coats, bathe and otherwise groom pets. Workers in this group are employed by animal hospitals and clinics, animal shelters, breeding and boarding kennels, zoos, laboratories, retail pet shops, dog training schools, pet grooming establishments, or may be self-employed.

Duties
Pet groomers and animal care workers perform some or all of the following duties:
- Prepare food and feed animals, fish or birds at scheduled intervals
- Clean and disinfect cages, pens and surrounding areas
- Shampoo, clip and groom animals
- Assist veterinarians and animal health technologists and technicians to inoculate and treat animals
- Assist animal breeders to handle and nurture animals
- Assist scientists and researchers in conducting laboratory tests with animals
- Monitor and document animal behaviour
- Train dogs to obey commands and perform specific duties in response to signals.

Skills
Pet groomers and animal care workers need the following skills and abilities:
- an interest in caring for and working with animals,
- the ability to detach oneself from an animal's suffering,
- clean habits but a tolerance for becoming dirty,
- tolerance for smelly and noisy environments,
- skills in moving, exercising and restraining animals of all kinds and sizes,
- be able to follow instructions and guidelines,
- have good observation skills,
- good health and physical fitness, manual dexterity in handling inoculations, laboratory equipment, grooming utensils,
- enjoy dealing with people and good verbal communication skills,
- some jobs will require an aptitude for sales,
- skills in training animals.

Employment Requirements
- In Manitoba, completion of secondary school is usually required. Depending on the type of work performed, training courses in animal handling, grooming or dog training are usually required. Animal health or veterinary assistant college courses may be required for animal care workers.

Terms & Conditions
Pet groomers and animal care workers commonly work indoors as well as outside. Their work may be physically demanding as they need to clean animal cages and lift heavy supplies.
Most pet groomers and animal care workers work a 37.5 to 40 hour week which includes some evening work. The majority work full time full-time (53%), although part time opportunities are available. Approximately 37% of the workforce are self employed (37%).

Education / Training
- Red River College offers a two-year diploma program in Animal Health Technology. Graduates of this program can receive credits toward a Bachelor of Science degree (Animal Science) at the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
- Robertson College, a private vocational institution, offers a Veterinary Hospital/Office Assistant program.

Career Paths
Animal attendants often start their careers in part-time or summer jobs or as volunteers.
Progression to animal health technologist jobs is possible with additional training.
Animal care workers may specialize in grooming, training, laboratory work, health care, or kennel or pound attendant.
With experience, kennel and pet shop attendants may eventually become managers or start their own businesses.

Outlook
Employment prospects for pet groomers and animal care workers are expected to be good in the period 2010 - 2014. Employment in Manitoba in 2010 is estimated at 325.
The occupational workforce is expected to remain fairly stable over the forecast period, although there may be some growth in demand as families with more disposable income and less time increasingly take advantage of grooming and attendant services for their pets.There will be frequent job openings due to turnover, as these jobs tend to attract young people at the beginning of their careers. In most cases there are few formal entry requirements for this occupational group other than a love of animals, so most positions are easily filled. Some pet groomers and animal care workers start by volunteering and get hired when a position comes open.
Employment for pet groomers and animal care workers is fairly evenly distributed across the province. Across industries, employment in these occupations is concentrated in Other Services (except Public Administration) (63%), followed by Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (9%), Retail Trade (8%) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (8%).
