Outlook
The employment prospects for landscaping and grounds maintenance labourers in the 2010 - 2014 period are expected to be good. Employment in Manitoba in 2010 is estimated at 3,640.
Employment growth is related to the increased use of green space by businesses, development of new golf courses and public green spaces, and the increased use of landscaping services by homeowners. Maintenance of existing green spaces, such as parks, golf courses, highways and other facilities will contribute to the number of jobs in this occupation. A growing number of homeowners simply do not have the time to tend to their own yards. Aging citizens who wish to remain in their own homes and condominium dwellers are also more inclined to contract for these services.
There is high turnover in this occupation, due to fairly low wages and seasonality. The average age is younger than for most other occupations, with almost half of the workforce under the age of 25. There are good opportunities for student employment.
A proportionally larger number of jobs for landscaping and grounds maintenance labourers are located in rural Manitoba. The three industries employing the largest number of landscaping and grounds maintenance labourers are: Administrative and Support Services (42%), Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (18%) and Public Administration (16%).
